Paragraph

For my project, I used many different types of functions and equations. For my head, I used an ellipse for the top of my head, and hyperbolas for the shaping of my cheeks, jaw, and chin, my neck was made of two different squared lines. I chose these functions for the power I had to manipulate them and make them into the closest shape to my picture as possible. I could also change the direction of the hyperpolia’s easily, making my chin and cheeks an easy fix and flip over the x and y-axis. My hair might have been the hardest part of this whole process because I couldn’t find a way to emulate my hair without making it too straight or too curly. So, I made it in two parts with an ellipse and a wave function that I rotated so it had some dimension to my hair. My lips were made of two ellipses that I made the lines very large for. My nose was also really hard to make, it’s made of straight angled lines and three ellipses as they gave it the best shape that was easy to connect and make it look like a fluid body part.

However, the thing that I am the proudest about this project is the research and learning I did to extend my knowledge in graphing ellipses. During this project, I really want to rotate the ellipses to create my eyes and eyebrows. And while I did make my pupils circles, I scoured the internet to find how to rotate ellipses and found it! https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=m4RHSzWHPdY, this video not only shows you how to write out the equation but also how it works and a little bit as to why. This is how I made my eyes and I am so proud of how they turned out, it also became easier to make my eyes not having to make them out of three or four parts while achieving the same results is very rewarding.

Economics 12 Core Competencies Reflection

This year in Economics 12 my class completed many assignments and projects, some of which I found better than others. This year I liked and found success in learning about market structures; knowing the different market structures and which ones are more successful in our Western world was very interesting and got me thinking a lot. I built up a new skill from this unit of being able to identify different types of markets. I have been able to apply this new critical thinking skill to my own life and identify different types of competition companies are in as well as different country’s main market structures. I can also think critically and create my own thoughts about why companies might be better off with a different market structure, or why they can’t have a certain market structure. I can also communicate almost all the concepts we learned clearly and concisely with my peers and adults in my life. I recently had a conversation with my dad about different market structures specifically oligopolies in the stock market business, as that is what he used to do for work. He was explaining to me how it doesn’t work as well anymore due to the amount of stock markets there are now. I found this very interesting to hear his opinion and be able to agree and understand what he was saying. I was also able to communicate with my mom about perfect competition because she didn’t entirely understand it, but it was in an article she was reading. I feel proud to be able to share my thoughts and opinions with my parents and show them my learning from Economics.

Personal Awareness and Responsibility Refection in pre-calculus 12

The study sheets that have been handed out throughout the course have been the best way for me to study and build a sense of responsibility around my test prep. This is something I have struggled with since I started getting tests in middle school and in the earlier grades (9-10) where I didn’t really have the need to get a lot of studying done to get a good mark on a test or two. But for this course, I couldn’t really cruise through like in the past, so when I figured out that the formative assessments are like a pre-test, I began writing notes and detailed explanations on them in red pen so I would remember what I did wrong and how to fix it. I would make sure that it was very evident that I needed to go back and study that problem and how to do it so I could find success on my actual assessment. I have also started to apply this to some of the more challenging problems from the workbook on a separate piece of paper where I will write in a bright pen to prepare myself and get more practice in with some of the areas of the unit, I might be struggling in. And quite frankly it has been working really well for the last few units. I plan to apply this going forward into calculus as well as it has become much easier to remember the right way and forms to do things in.

Life Sciences

Feedback for the course

  1. I really enjoyed going over the ocean animals such as sponges and mollusks, because I have always wanted to work with the ocean as my career. the My octopus teacher documentary also truly fascinated me.
  2. I didn’t care too much for the worms, as I found them gross and honestly kind of uninteresting.
  3. I wished we had covered more evolution of past animals and the dinosaur eras as those are so cool and filled with tones of different plants, animals and interesting internal structures that we might not have anymore.
  4. throughout this course, I think my studying skills got better as the course went on and I think I really started to use and understand the new studying techniques I had been practicing.
  5. I think that Miss Hipdich did a great job at teaching and giving us plenty of resources to use and study with.
  6. I think if I took this course again I would study more for each test.
  7. I plan on continuing with some aspects of biology with a big possibility of working in the ocean in some capacity.

French 11 Movie Poster

Core Competencies

For our poster, I showed I could collaborate and share ideas within a team. I showed I could divide work and get it done with the help and suggestions of my group member. I also demonstrated care for my group’s opinions and recommendations for our project. I learned that collaborating can be helpful and fun when with the right people, and can even make your projects better. I will strive to do more group projects in the future just like how this one was, organized, prepared and well thought out.

IDS Inquiry Reflection

My inquiry question is “what were the 7 ancient wonders of the world?” It has gone through many changes throughout September and October as I needed to find something that could keep me interested until the end of the year. I explained that in my personal learning plan, I also explained that I’m going to keep myself interested by spreading out my research and project building so I’m not doing the same thing all the time.

I have also started working on my time management in IDS time, often times I will be doing IDS but some days I need to do an assignment or study for a test. but when I do that I find time another day in the week to do my IDS.

I haven’t found too many challenges in my process just yet, but I do imagine that when I start putting it together I will run into some formatting and layout problems. But I will figure that out when it comes up.

I have had growth in my Thinking as I’ve worked my way through this project. I have been working on my research skills and perfecting them as I’ve been working. I have also been able to form complex understandings of other people’s work and research.

I am still on track to finish my project on time and as I prepare I am still keeping my options open for my presentation.

Graphing a Parabola

Significant Values in my Equation

The significant values in my equation are K, H, and A

The K value determines where on the y-axis my parabola will be shifted, for example in my equation my K value is -3 so I know my parabola will be 3 units below the x-axis. K is representative of the vertical shift of the parabola, if I had a positive 3, for example, I would move above the x-axis. This means that my parabola will open at -3, somewhere along the x-axis.

The A value in my equation will tell me which way my parabola will open and how the number representing the A value affects how my parabola looks. In my parabola my A value is a positive 1, which means my parabola will open upwards towards the positive numbers of the graph. But that’s not all, the A value can also affect your width. When a parabola has a large and positive A value the parabola is narrow and facing upwards; so when you have a smaller positive number the parabola is wider and up-facing. Also, when the A value is negative the widths of the values stay the same, but the direction in which they open changes to a down-facing parabola. In my parabola, the A value is a fraction (1/3) which is under one so using what we learned in class I know that my parabola is going to be wider than someone who has an A value of 2 or 3.

The H value shifts the parabola from left to right along the horizontal axis. If your H value is negative it will shift to the left, whereas if it’s positive it will shift to the right. But remember, the H value changes as you take it out of the brackets; lets say it was negative inside the brackets but as you take it out of the brackets it becomes a positive. This is a lot like my parabola, where the H value is positive inside but comes out as a negative 1, which shifts my whole parabola to the left.

Self-Assessment

1. Give an example from this assignment where you represented the same mathematical idea in three different ways?

I showed both the simple parabola and my own parabola side by side in a photo with both equations labelled. I also used mathematical words and terms that where used in class to get my point across.

2. Give an example from this assignment where you used mathematical vocabulary to demonstrate your understanding.

Any of the three paragraphs above are evidence of my mathematical vocabulary that was used in class.

3. Give an example from this assignment where you used formatting to share the information in a clear and organized way.

For this assignment, I utilised demos to help me visually graph my parabola.   My parabola was plotted next to the original y=x^2 parabola, so I  was able to distinguish the two. With this method, I was able to see the two graphs, which benefited me in comprehending the math.  Additionally, I had to clarify my parabola, so I explained and showed my understanding for the various values. This also showed that I recognize what the variables stand for and how they are used in each equation. I also showed I am also able to recognize how each value effects the points on the graph.

Identity

My Poem

bloody heels in the air

head in the water

not drowning but restricted

only able to watch, one after another

ill, upset, or plagued with problems

focus, they need it

so, keep quiet

or don’t

and have your head in the air

feet in the sand

and sun on your face

Core Competency Reflection

I can take the information we learned about identity by conveying mine in an artistic and creative way, such as in the poem above. I can also generate ideas that help the creative process and keep going when one idea doesn’t work out. Such as during this poem writing I had a few drafts before I found the right words and structure to use. I can accept setbacks and failures, I had many drafts before I even came to this idea and was frustrated but eventually I can to the new concept.

Core Competency Goals

  • If there is disagreement within the group, I find it helpful to – find some sort of common ground among us and resolve the issue. I find it much easier to resolve an issue with a compromise rather than a settlement. I plan on using this strategy as a problem solving technique this year anytime I have group work.
  • I can put myself out there if it mean getting work done – If I am ever group with quieter people or an awkward group, I can step up and put myself out there. It would be easier to work if one person is being louder, and if no one else steps up I am willing to be that student.
  • I understand others ideas and connect with them – I find it easier to see others ideas from their perspectives and add them to our work. It makes much more harmonious work if everyone is can work on the same level and brain wave. I will try and implement this to more of my group work this year by opening up about my idea and asking others about theirs.

PHE 10 AH Reflection

My Product

I am tired and worn out this morning

Personal Health and Awareness

Some of the things I do to stay mentally and physically healthy include stepping back and taking a break when I feel I need it. I can also do this when I’m feeling burnt out or tired of everything; this is when I know I need a break or a step back from everything to regroup. Some of my preferred strategies for maintaining a healthy, balanced lifestyle encompass doing sports as well as finding a creative outlet that I enjoy. Another way I keep myself healthy is by keeping a healthy diet; eating right is a good way for me to stay happy and in a good mode throughout the day.
