Parent Function & My Parabola

The vertex of the parent function is (0,0) and the red line faces upwards because it is positive.

The vertex of my parabola is (-1,2) and the blue line faces upwards because it is also positive.

Significance of a, h, and k

In the equation I was given, -1 is in place of “h” and 2 takes the place for “k” which represents the vertex of the parabola, and 1/4 represent “a”. The H determines the horizontal shift of the parabola and gives us the axis of symmetry, a positive number would shift left whereas a negative value would make the parabola shift to the right. Because the 1 is positive it made the parabola shift to the left. The K value would determine if the parabola shifts up or down, a positive K value would make the parabola shift up, and a negative K value would shift down. In my equation the k value is 2 which means the parabola shifts upwards twice. Lastly the A value would determines the way the parabola would face, for example, when A is positive the parabola opens upwards, and when A Is negative then the parabola would face downwards. In the equation I received, 1/4 is positive meaning that the parabola opens upwards. It made my parabola different than the parent function because the a, h, and k values on my parabola caused it shift to the left horizontally, up vertically and being a lot wider

An example where I represented the same mathematical idea by first writing my equation down, then I plugged it into demos to be able to see it visually on a graph. With what the graph showed me I compared my parabola with the parent function graph to see the differences between the two parabolas.

When I was stating the significance of the values a, h, and k in my parabola I used, mathematical vocabulary like vertex, positive & negative values, horizontally, vertically, axis of symmetry. These vocabulary terms helped me differentiate between my given parabola and the parent function.

I demonstrated my formatting to share information for this assignment by using desmos, It helped me get a clearer visual of my parabola on a graph and the difference it has with the parent function. I also talked about the importance of ‘a’, ‘h’, and ‘k’ clearly in my paragraph stating what they signify and giving examples from my given parabola to state their significance. I also colour coded the two parabolas making mine red and the parent function green so both are clearly seen.

In this course, We worked with a group of classmates often working on questions from the new unit we are learning, I would always work well with whoever I was in a group in, and we would work together to finish all the questions. Whenever we don’t know what step to do, we would ask and if someone understood it first we would help explain to the other group members. And by the end of the year my group was comfortable working with each other and we are able to do the whiteboard questions collectively.

Also, In this class I have treated myself and others with respect. All course long I have been a good classmate, and whenever we did group work questions I would never do anything crossing the line with classmates and I would always try to make all my classmates feel comfortable when were working together. And when we are working on a whiteboard question that if I can help them in any way , if I correct them or say something they won’t feel offended in any way, and that I speak with a respectable tone of voice.

Lastly, In Pre-Calculus 11 you are given a lot of vocabulary, and throughout the course lots of the vocabulary are very important to know and fully understand because they can help you to understand how to solve a problem. As math isn’t my strongest subject getting all these vocabulary words was a lot to take in for myself, and not fully understanding & knowing these vocabulary words definitely impacted my overall performance in this course. But by the end of the semester, and after doing all the units I have started to understand the vocabulary and what they mean, I was starting to be able to form a definition in my head about the vocabulary, which help me solve the questions and also helping me keep up with the lesson that we are learning.

Advice For Future Students

My advice for future students in the course is to always complete all the workbook questions, don’t leave them all unfinished because the questions will look similar to the ones on quizzes and tests. Always ask when you don’t understand a question and don’t hesitate to look back at the notes, they’re always easily accessible on one note and it could help further your understanding of the material. My last piece of advice Is to always be prepared for tests and quizzes, change your study habits to a system that can help you, take breaks but always try to pay attention to the lessons to be able to succeed in the course.
