Conics Project: Desmos Self-Portrait

I created my self portrait using various functions. I started out with my eyes using the formula for circles and using an inequality to shade it in. I then used quadratic functions (parabolas) to get an almond eye shape. The formula for circle is (x-a)^2 + (y-b)^2 = r^2. Then to turn it into an ellipse, (x-a) and (y-b) will be numerators of a fraction over c^2 and d^2. This makes an oval shape shown in the nostrils. I used many linear functions as well (y=x) although not seen obviously, but all of the straight lines are linear functions. (Because the restrictions are small) I used cubic functions (y=x^3) for my hair because I think it illustrated the swoop of the side bangs well. I would restrict the cubic function to only keep the top of it before the dip down. An absolute value function was used in the lips as well (in the middle) shown as a small v and a tighter restriction. I used many parabolas (in the eyes, hair, and face shape) It may not look like a parabola at first, but it is because I expanded it and restricted the function to only show one side of the parabola. (Using a smaller number for expansion/compression, excluding reflection, will result in a wider parabola) Lastly, I used a hyperbola for my neck. What I think I did well was I highlighted what were my main features (including smile lines) and most of the lines matched up to my picture. What I would want to change is to connect the lines next time to be able to shade the face with more colour.

Titration Lab – Core Competency

Communication

In this lab, communication was used throughout between me and my partner. This lab required a lot of communication, confirmation, and task delegating. For example, a task would be that one partner would grab the beakers, and one would set up the ring stand. Communication was used especially when doing the half drops when close to the point where the colour fully changed. One partner had to shake the Erlenmeyer flask and one partner would do the drops and washing with distilled water. We would have to communicate and tell each other to stop at a certain point. When releasing pressure in the pipette to reach the 100 mL line, one partner was doing the action, and the other had to be eye level to tell the other when to close the top tightly. Lastly for confirmation, we both had to use a lot of verbal affirmation during the lab as well. We would ask each other if we finished each task or step. This is important because there are many steps and a partner needs to confirm before they move ahead to the other step. For example, I would have to ask my partner if they had throughly washed and rinsed the burette before I pour the NaOH in. Overall, communication is vital in a lab like the titration lab and I hope to build on these skills as I continue the course.

Core Competency Self Reflection: Pre Calculus 12

Study Sheet

Personal Awareness & Responsibility

My artifact is a study sheet that I make before each test. It usually consists of main topics with some example questions. I come up with the topics and questions by looking at the formative and writing down things I should remember for the test. This one specifically was for the trigonometry functions test.

“A personally aware and responsible individual takes steps to ensure their well-being, sets goals and monitors progress, regulates emotions and manages stress, and recognizes and advocates for their own rights.”

Reflecting on this quote, I believe this was true this semester because I would get all tasks done at my own pace. For example, I would sometimes not watch the videos assigned for the day because of extra-curricular or business, but then I would set a goal for myself to use a day (on the weekend per-say) to watch and do notes for all the videos missed. I learned that I tend to not remember things that I learned if I just listen and watch. I think it is most affective when I write my own notes while watching the videos, and also writing notes on an overall summary of the unit before the test. This helps me recap what I learned and helps me remember concepts for the concepts. These all relate to self-regulation. Being aware of my strengths and weaknesses, making goals, and going at my own pace.

Desert Island Project

Desert Island Artifact

About The Project

We were put into a situation where a group of people were isolated on an island wishing to survive. We were told to make laws and a charter in able to keep the group in accordance. Me and my partner developed ideas about splitting roles on the island into units. After that, we compared our charter and law to some of the past laws like Habeas Corpus, etc.

Core Competency Reflection

  1. In discussions and conversations, I help to build and extend understanding by… building off the other person. In this case, when working with my partner we would build off of each others ideas and gradually add our points.
  2. An example of where I built upon someone else’s ideas is… when my partner brought up the idea of units I thought of what each unit should be called and their responsibilities. My partner also brought up the idea of the Justice Unit and I brought up the idea of having a leader from each unit to make up the Justice Unit.
  3. I seek, develop and weigh options as demonstrated by…when I was told to compare our government to Justinian Code and Magna Carta I would develop and weigh options as I carefully studied the notes of the powerpoint so I could choose which parts were similar to the government we created
  4. · Examples of where I communicate clearly and purposefully can be seen in… discussions with my partner as we branched off of each others ideas. Of course there are disagreements so we would talk about each of our points, then settle on an idea to include in our project. Class time was used wisely and our conversations and ideas contributed to the project

Goal: I can contribute to and work with criteria to improve my own work; evidence of that is…

My goal is to continue working on this and checking on the criteria so that I can get better scores. I will work on this as I approach future projects and instead of just doing work and calling it a day, I will look over and proofread the work that I did in hopes to improve it.

Curricular Competency Reflection

We were able to create a government to keep the Island in order. The first thing we came up with was Units and with divisions of Justice, Agricultural, Cooking, Exploration, etc. While doing this project, we had to think about possible outcomes for each idea. This means setting limits and additional rules to laws. I think we worked well because we were able to finish the project on time. We also used class time well. Some things that we could work on is using that extra time that we had to further our information on our government. Using the extra time could gain more points in the future.

IDS: Inquiry Reflection

My Inquiry Question: What products and methods do Estheticians use so customers can reduce stress/pressure, and have the most relaxation? It hasn’t really changed after my personal learning plan. It was mostly directed in the same path (Related to estheticians) My time management during IDS was okay but not the best. Sometimes I would do other work because I had something due that day. Looking forward I should prioritize IDS. Sometimes when there is a Pro-D Day causing schedules to shift and having no IDS that week, I usually don’t find time outside of school to complete one hour of IDS.

Some challenges I am facing with my inquiry is finding a way to transition into the practical part of my IDS Question. I want to start practicing the techniques I research about but of course I can’t do that in school on Wednesdays. And because I find it hard doing IDS on the weekend/finding time to practice. Some challenges I have overcome was being consistent with IDS. I complete a section of research almost every week.

I think I am showing growth in the core competency of Thinking. Critical and Creative. Every week, when I do more research, it enhances my knowledge of the career of estheticians.

I will share my inquiry by making a video. In the video I will perform a massage/facial on the client (mom/friend) Using the techniques I had learned in the research process. Yes I think I will be able to share my learning by end of May. I need to transition into practicing the actual facial though.

As for continuing onto IDS with my Capstone for next year, I am not sure if I will. I have many other interests other than Esthetician jobs so I might choose another focus for my Capstone. My Inquiry could be a possible choice though.

RSelf Study

I would re-write vocabulary until my brain memorized it.

What I did well was studying the vocabulary. I think I have a good memory so I was able to do well for the vocabulary part of tests. I also think I handed things in on time. I didn’t have much missing work which is a good work habit. I can improve my study habits by not just cramming on the night before but understanding grammar points even well before the test date.

An example of something I have spent a lot of time learning is grammar and sentences because I wanted to make sure I understood the grammar so I can answer the test questions well.

Some skills I have developed to make my creative activities better is being able to use visual representation in the Pecha Kucha presentation. I also develop more communication skills and speech skills while presenting it and working on it with others.

To celebrate an accomplishment such as doing well on a test, I will treat myself with rest and eat good food. Also self accomplishments make me feel happier about where I am at in the class (reassurance)

I will continue my Japanese language acquisition by continuing to study Japanese (Japan bowl coming up) and also watch and listen to Japanese.

If I could travel back in time, I would start healthy work habits and not procrastinate as much. For advice to others, I would tell others to try their best in every assignment because marks will add up eventually.

English First Peoples 11 Reflection

My Artifact:

Indigenous Storytelling Assignment <40 second clip> <Original = 4 minutes>

Curricular Competencies Reflection

Create and Communicate:

I demonstrated creativity when approaching this assignment. I learned a lot in the Storytelling unit about Indigenous values and important lessons in their culture. I think I grew in my representing skills especially through this project. I took the opportunity to try to show my thinking in a creative way. I wanted to show a lot of visual aspects and made a video to show others my thought process through a whiteboard animation. I will take what I learned in the storytelling unit to be more willing to listen and learn more about First Nation Stories. This works toward reconciliation because being more aware of Indigenous people stories and understanding their lessons in their culture will allow myself to have an open mind to aid to working on reconciliation.

Core Competencies Reflection

Thinking:

I was thinking of what to do for the assignment and I used creative thinking when I decided to do the whiteboard animation. I wanted to do things differently then what most people decided to do (Powerpoint). Some strategies I used for the video was gathering thoughts and sorting them in small topics so I could organize which visuals to show for each point I made. (I had to figure out which pictures for each “slide/frame”) Something that helped with the planning process was writing everything on paper before I found the pictures. I also made a script and had to limit how much I said to fit into each frame. This included summarizing thoughts of each topic. What I would improve is to try to get rid of the watermark or experiment with another program.
