Core-Competency Self-Assesment

Critical and Reflective Thinking

One leadership quality in which I believe I possess to a great strength would be Humility. This is one that to be honest, many teenagers don’t have, They always feel the need to be right or subject the blame to someone else. If I’m wrong I’ll take the blame. There have been times where whilst filming Cent show or even during Leadership where I’ve made mistakes. During Cent show, we’ve definitely made bad episodes. And I’ll admit they were bad and I’ll own up to them, but I use that negative feedback as a way to make improvements within the next episode.

One leadership skill I possess would be adaptability. This is one that had been cultivating and growing during leadership 11, and I believe it’s showing promise now. I’ve already had to make some decisions whilst being in charge of different events. From having the cotton candy machine packed up in the event that the rain gets worse or being able to help out in many different areas during the Parent – Teacher Conferences.

A quality I’d like to develop is my organization. I’m quite all over the place which has me forgetting certain details or things I’d like to get done. Creating a planner to help notify myself of these things will help to guide me onto a better path of cohesiveness. Rather than being everywhere.

A skill I’d like to improve would be my delegation skill. I struggle to delegate roles sometimes (During Cent show) because I have a sense that they won’t be done to the way I’d like them to be or at all. I can easily improve this by rather than giving them something to do, I provide instructions in order for it to be done beyond my expectations.

Working with others to achieve a goal has always been a focal point within the Cent show. If you’re unable to do this, the show won’t work. The amount of memories and camaraderie within the show have built it to where it is today. There is proof in it by simply looking at our past episodes. While yes we did improve editing and reading our lines, the comfortability of working with each other and becoming friends to achieve the goal of creating the best episode we can has constantly been improving with each episode.

Titration Core-Competency

Titration Flask

Core-Competency Reflection

The Communication Core-Competency was vital towards the success and failures my partner and I faced. This lab was something that would be significantly harder to do alone and require a lot of teamwork. I’d swirl the flask while my partner dropped the base into the acid. I’d monitor any changes alongside letting him know when he’s suppose to stop. Through communication and teamwork, we were able to achieve some epic results. Without communication, there’s no way our titrations could’ve gone well. Our teacher also mentioned that friendships die here, ours was strengthened.

Where I’m From Essay

My Paper

The Writing Process

When my teacher introduced this project to us, I immediately thought of who I’d interview. My dad instantly popped into my head. The questions that I formulated for him were curated around this one topic that I was hoping to learn about, as my knowledge surrounding the subject in our family was little to none. As I made them, it felt less interesting and I decided to make the questions broader, to receive what I felt would be a better answer. Once I had the questions ready. I procrastinated for a long time before deciding to finally interview my dad. Once I was done interviewing my dad, I realized how much history my family has alongside how talented we are. It was also slightly saddening to hear the answer my dad gave, as he felt that his life may have been incredibly different had he been given the choice to stay in the Philippines. My dad was incredibly willing to share stories with me, which made the project a breeze. When it came to translating what my dad had said onto paper was probably the biggest challenge because I didn’t really know where to start. Once I was able to grasp where I was going to start, it was a lot easier from there. After I had written about 90% of my essay, I came to a realization that I did the essay wrong. (Or what I thought was wrong) So I had to rewrite certain sections. This was a huge blockage in my will to work on this project but I handed in a pretty decent product in the end. This whole project was excellent experience as it helped me dive into history and qualities about my family that I didn’t even know about.

Core Competency Reflection

Others find my feedback useful because I… When we wrote our essay drafts, we were required to peer-edit two other drafts. My desk mates liked my feedback as I didn’t hold back and tried to be as critical as possible. This had me giving as much feedback as possible so that they could create an essay to the best of their efforts.

One strategy or activity that stimulates my imagination is… When my dad told his story and the story of my grandparents, I fuelled my mind with images of what or how I believe that situation went. This included using what I knew of these people or events to create a scenario akin to a reel of images of important events.

Some skills I have developed to make my creative activities better are… A huge skill that I developed while doing this project would be my interview skills. This allowed me to flesh them out and had me generating followup questions on the spot to prod my dad for more details, which contributed to an easier work-load.

As an active listener, I notice that I … Always give eye contact, alongside giving an auditory response to allow the person to know that I’m giving full attention. Asking questions also allows me to stay engaged within the conversation, interview, or presentation.

Core Competency Goal

I currently believe that I should work on my Personal Awareness and Responsibility as that seems to be the CC that I lack knowledge/ability in the most. Whenever I make an Edublog it’s my most neglected CC. I hope to reward myself for doing extensive pieces of work rather than neglecting these needs to keep myself focused and not drained. Creating proper goals for myself and a set schedule would also be of great use.

IDS: Inquiry Reflection

Progress Reflection

My Inquiry question is “How to run a school wide news show with a crew as new as I am?” My Focus has not shifted or changed at all. Besides that we’ve gotten a formula down and we’re now just constantly trying to improve and take any constructive criticism.

My time management for Cent show works well as I always dedicate 1 1/2 – 2 1/2 hours a week towards Cent show. We started with wanting to film during Cent time then moved to Friday mornings, but now we’ve moved to Friday’s after school which is way better because we’re allowed the freedom to film without a limit.

Mr. Rensen and feedback from teachers and students have been the most helpful resources towards refining and creating the best possible show we can. Past Cent show episodes as well have also been incredible help.

We’re currently facing the challenge of how to get student engagement, and our current plan is to do more interviews as that seems to always get good rating from students. In terms of problems we’ve faced in the past, there are a countless amount. The biggest challenge that we’ve overcome would be getting rid of “baggage”. We had some members who made empty promises which heavily hindered the shows performance and it’s been an overall awful experience. But through sheer will and determination we were able to get rid of them alongside filling roles with reliable co-stars.

Communication has been the biggest Core-Competency that I’ve been able to improve. Whether it be with the crew to improve smaller aspects or with peers to gain a better understanding of how they view the show. I’ve definitely assumed the role of leader with how much work I put into the project as we occasionally also get Leadership related assignments which myself or Chazai usually do. If it’s a group activity than most of us usually pitch in.

I will most likely create a diary or journal, describing the hardships and moments in which I feel shaped the creation of Cent Show 2023. It’s been an incredible journey that I feel very passionate about and I’d be glad to share it all.

Because of Capstone, Leadership and a promise, I will definitely be continuing this project alongside my current co-stars. Hopefully we’ll also be able to find younger students who we can train to continue the show once we’re gone. I’ve been told that this basically writes my Capstone. 🙂

This photo encapsulates the energy in which Cent-show has during a filming session (I broke a lightbulb)

Spanish Core-Competencies

First Spanish Dialogue

Bad quality image of our mark (26/29) (10/10 for acting, 7/10 for script, 9/9 for requirements)

Creative-Thinking

To say our script was creative would be an understatement. We introduced elements of our script in a fun and engaging way involving lots of action. We started off in a basketball game where my character aggravates another character into pushing him. My partner thought that I’d simply stumble back, but I love method acting so I launched myself backwards. (Almost hitting my head on some desks.) That was just one of multiple moments in which I took my role to heart. Even if you don’t know any Spanish, you could gain a general understanding of what our script was about simply through our acting. Friendship, betrayal, redemption, our script had it all. Though we did lack slightly on the actual dialogue on our script, the intense energy we brought to our script made up for a majority of it. It was fun working with two people who don’t mind thinking outside of the box to create a fun script for not only ourselves but the class. I would gladly work with these two again. I’d also like to believe that our script was the most creative out of the class. Most scripts didn’t bring enough energy.

20th Century World History 12 Edublog

By Zeaus

Is “History: The Story” told by the winners?

I’d like to believe that it is told by the winners. Whenever you view history you see what has occurred. The books in which we use to learn this information is usually created by someone who’s on the side of the victors. A lot of history has been lost when wars are won because the winner will choose to either wipe out the information entirely or ignore it completely. I’d like to believe this doesn’t happen as often anymore due to the technological advantages we have now a-days, but back then if paper with history on it was burned or destroyed without having been copied it was gone. If the Germans had won WWI in the 20th century, they’d obviously paint themselves as the “heroes” or “saviours” that overcame the odds. We paint the Central Powers as the bad guys in WWI, but I believe that there really isn’t a major villain in the war. Yet because the Triple Entente won, many people see the Central Powers as the enemy. Same can’t be said for WWII as everyone can agree that the axis leaders weren’t good people.

I can analyze evidence to make judgements

In History 12 I believe we constantly take information that’s given to us and not only make judgements, but formulate our own opinions/interpretations as well. Just recently, we analyzed quotes which we were then asked to explain their significance to the topic or how we interpreted the quote(s). During our U.S. interwar subject, we all took different quotes from Henry Ford, which we then discussed with a partner and explained to the rest of the class the significance it has to our world today. Mine related to the passing of knowledge, and how someone is willing to learn whatever they want, but you can’t force someone to learn. I related that to my peer tutoring of Socials 10.

Life Sciences 11 Core Competency Self-Assesment: Communication

by Zeaus

I’m unable to rotate the photo

This is a dichotomous button activity that we did in the beginning of the year. This displayed communication in two areas. My partner Harrison and I were able to communicate our ideas to each other and separate the world allowing us to finish the assignment within two work blocks. We were also able to communicate to Ms. Chew our thought process on the assignment and our understanding of classifying different “organisms” or buttons. This was an interesting way to start of the year, but it was an enjoyable assignment. A skill I gained was collaborating with peers as my communication skills haven’t been great the past two years. I hope to be able to grow in communicating my understanding/knowledge of a subject to the teacher.

Core-Competency Goals

By Zeaus

Collaboration Prompt: I make an effort to include missing voices/ perspectives by

This is something that I can sometimes struggle to do. This may happen because people don’t feel comfortable in adding towards a group discussion and I’d rather not force someone who may believe their answer is either wrong or it adds nothing to. the conversation. I personally believe that any input as long as it’s logical, adds something to a discussion whether or not it’s wrong. I hope that I’m able to be more forward and inclusive this semester in order to combine everyones ideas.

Creative Thinking Prompt: An example of where I built upon someone else’s ideas is

Whenever someone has the same idea as me, I tend to disregard my idea instead of doing anything more with it. I tend to abandon it as I feel that it would be better for me to not always try to create new ideas as the original idea can be still be good, without me needing to completely scan it as long as I improve or build upon it to “think outside the box.” This may not be something I’m able to improve on this semester, but next semester when I have woodworking will be brilliant.

Personal Awareness and Responsibility:When I am sad, angry or frustrated, doing… helps me be more productive or calm. :

Whenever I’m emotional, I tend to just focus and think on what had put me in that situation. I let it buildup and it becomes pent up after a while. This can distract me from my work and it can cause me to waste hours on end as it clouds my mind. I hope to find something at school that I’m able to relieve my stress from and clears my mind allowing me to focus on all my work or return to a calm state.
