Spanish 10 Core Competency Self-Assesment

Core-Competency: Communication (Communicating and Collaborating)

This was one of our most recent partner scripts that we did. Even though there were some mistakes, overall we did very well. This relates to the sub-competency of communicating as my partner is significantly more knowledgeable in Spanish than I am, so I tend to ask questions on meanings to best refresh my mind. While my partner is knowledgeable in Spanish, his grammar can be a bit questionable. Through this we both communicate ideas while also refreshing/learning new things about the Spanish language. In short, he makes the basis of the scripts then I follow along and fix errors like accents or grammatically wrong sentences. Sometimes I also have to simplify sentences as this is only grade 10 Spanish and his ideas are too grand for our grade. A lot of our communication is also collaboration and without these two aspects our script wouldn’t be as good as it was. Now that I think of it, our partnership benefits each other quite well.

New Career Project: Neurochip Physician

Benefits towards society

As we move towards newer technology, neurochips are slowly becoming reality. With Elon Musk having completed tests using chimps and is currently working towards using human test subjects. Something like neurochips will most likely scare most people. It’s currently a big fear but it’ll be the future. With Neurochip Physicians, it allows for personal professionals to be introduced into society to ease tensions and have people know that there are professionals who specialize in neurochips. They can educate the public, which can result in more people getting neurochips and more money for the physicians. Elon Musk also gets a drone army.

Why should you devote your career to this?

Neurochips are new technology and the future. You may be interested in this career as it also offers a good annual salary (Estimated average of $275,000) alongside a commission per patient. As this technology is so new, this job is almost completely brand new, allowing for a high demand resulting in a booming career in the first few years. For a city like Coquitlam, you’d only need 2-3 Neurochip Physicians. The need in the future for more occupations will most likely not increase by a large amount, as this is an incredibly specialized field.

Are you replacing any careers?

No, as this technology is so new, being a neurochip physician is a heavily specialized career. Your workplace would be integrated inside of a city hospital, or you’d have your own specialized medical clinic. Using both WorkBC and Indeed, the average salary of a specialist physician was $251,000 on WorkBC which we then combined with the average salary of a neurologist being $298,000 on indeed. We decided an estimate of $275,000 would be the most likely salary you would have during this career. Of course some salaries may differ depending on location and availability.

Education And Training

UBC will be offering a new program dedicated to the study of neurology alongside the technology of neurochips. This includes the history, debunking false information, being able to convey information to the public, and diagnosing any possible problems caused by neurochips. In order to take this course, you will need to follow standard UBC acceptance policies while also following the new rules listed specifically for this course.

–  Anatomy and Physiology 12: Neurology

– Grade of 80% or higher in the course above

– Chemistry 12

Certain secondary institutions offer  Anatomy and Physiology 12:Neurology, including Centennial Secondary School. This course will heavily focus upon Neurology and research the current events relating to Neuro technology. If your school does not offer the new course, you are able to register for the course online or take it during the summer

Neuro Medical Engineering is the new course. The course will take place over four years. Each year will be $8,530. ($34,120 for 4 years) International student prices will be $54,320 per year.

Social Studies Core-Competency

Japanese Internment Paragraph

Japanese Internment camps are a positive change for Canada, though some may counter this with how we’re violating their rights. We must focus on the majority over the minority, as currently the majority are fearful of the Japanese. Canadians will feel safer, and this may also protect the Japanese Canadians from the more fearful folk who may take matters into their own hands if something isn’t done.

Personally, I don’t hate the Japanese Canadians, but the stories of we hear on the heinous crimes that the Japanese soldiers have committed. It certainly justifies the fear that some of us Canadians may feel towards the Japanese Canadians. Sure, they may not be the same, but you never know if there are some loyal nationalists amongst them feeding the Japanese military information. If they were to be put in camps it’d ease everyone’s minds knowing they’re all in one place being watched. We can all get a good rest.

The second problem we face is that not everyone is so open minded towards the Japanese Canadians. I previously mentioned some Canadians taking matters into their own hands, but it’s another fear that I personally have for the Japanese Canadians. So, they’d be safer in these camps with each other, away from those driven mad from fear as they may harm our fellow man. My father told me stories of the internment camps that the government put German and Austro-Hungarians into during the previous Great War. So, there’s not as much of a difference if we were to do it again for everyone’s safety. If we were to sell their possessions, we could use the money to further support the war effort and end this conflict quicker so everyone can return to their normal lives. It’s better than them getting destroyed, vandalised, or stolen during the Japanese’s time in the internment camps.

Curricular/Core-Competencies Reflection

I made an ethical judgement about the action of internment the Japanese-Canadians in my paragraph.

I did assess and explained the justification for different views of Japanese-Canadian internment in my research handout and paragraph.

I did assess, understood and explained the significance of the threat of the Japanese army and its treatment of people it conquered, in British Columbia, in my research handout and paragraph.

I did ask and respond to questions to be an active and supportive listener.

I now understand and can appreciate diverse perspectives on issues and can resolve problems effectively and responsibly.

I can now understand and tell, after examining the facts of the possible threat from Japanese-Canadians in Canada and the opinions of various people, the difference between fact and opinion.

Spanish 10 Core Competency Self Assessment

Communication: Collaboration In a Group Script

Spanish 10 Script Front-side: First Script we wrote
Spanish 10 Script Back-Side

This was the first script that I’d created for my Spanish 10 class. My group consisted of two others, someone I have been friends with for the past five years, and a classmate who I just got to know. But when creating our script it allowed us to all get a view on where we each stand in our knowledge of Spanish. Even though we were at different levels of our knowledge, we all contributed a fair share of info/ideas to create a fun script that we were proud of. I didn’t agree with everything, as some ideas were a bit “outlandish”. I was able to improve my social/collaboration skills by working with someone I hardly knew, but we got along quite well while at the same time realising that I played a bit of a passive role, which I probably have to brush up on and improve my “leadership” skills again. I hadn’t done a group thing in a while. But seeing as we’re writing this in the present and this was the past, I think I’m gaining my leadership skills back.

CPR Reflection and Core Competencies

CPR Reflection

What was something that you learned that you didn’t know or consider before?: Something I hadn’t considered before beginning my training on CPR was how easy it is to retain the information that might help one day save someones life. Going into this I thought CPR was something that required months of training to get right and learn, but within a week I’m confident of my skills going into both the written and practical test.

What is a takeaway from the Theory or Practical CPR unit?: A huge takeaway is that I can now know the information in order to save someones life if CPR is required. My dad isn’t the healthiest person, so if worst comes to worst he has a heart attack I now know how to recognise and react to him having a heart attack.

How does this unit connect to the previously discussed nutrition unit?: A connection would be the beginning of the 4 R’s, risk. Many of the risks for a heart attack involved diet and lifestyle choices. Diets high in cholesterol were more susceptible to heart attacks. In the nutrition unit we learned the benefits to a balanced diet, and CPR showed us how to save someone who might not be on a balanced diet.

Self Assessment Of Core Competencies

I take on roles and responsibilities in a group; I do my share: For this whenever we did partner scenarios, I always took initiative and even put in a bit to much into my acting. I did my part and sometimes a bit too much.

I persevere with challenging tasks and take ownership of my goals, learning behaviour: I’ve taken learning CPR very seriously and have left very little room to fool around. I’ve filled out two different review manuals to make sure I’ve studied to the best of my ability. I will even ask for a third if I’m allowed.

I am kind to others, and support others when they need it: While doing the drills, I never made fun of someone if they did something wrong or forgot to do a step. I’d remind them, give them tips or show them an example on proper hand techniques.

I give, receive, and act on feedback to progress in my goals: As previously mentioned, I give feedback to my peers but I’m not perfect myself. I’ve been in a situation where I forget a small step, but a small step might contribute to something larger, which in the case of CPR can mean life or death. I’ve done my best to retain as much information as possible to make sure I pass the practical and written tests.

I find it easy to be part of a group: I have a bit of trouble when it comes to working in a group for CPR. I “hog” a bit of chest compressions, which results in me wearing myself out. When instead I could do 2 sets of 30 then swap out with a partner and repeat that process. This is something I’m hoping to improve upon. A way for me to improve upon this would be to remember to not wear myself out, because if I wear myself out I’m basically useless.

My Digital Footprint

Ways to Build a Positive Digital Footprint:

I used Venngage to make this “Infographic.”

My Reflection

My digital footprint can leave both positive and negative impacts on my life. Whether it be people siphoning my data and selling it to foreign companies or what I say or do online. I never internet that isn’t private, as it’s a very dangerous act since anyone can use it. I also, before posting anything check over the post to make sure that I don’t share anything I wouldn’t want to be shared. I’ve never posted my face on my social media accounts. My preferred strategies of keeping a healthy online presence is through not using social media very often. I’m basically a ghost, since I post once a year or every 6 months. I only accept people who are followed by people I know or are acquainted with. I usually only talk to my close friends, and this way of using social media has worked for me for years. Basically I don’t use social media as much as others may. My dad and online experiences have both heavily affected the way I act and what I do online. My dad has taught my brothers and I since we were young on do’s and don’ts for behaving online. Online experiences like videos spreading awareness of things that have happened to people who weren’t careful on the internet have also helped my decision making online. This has helped me mature online and in my daily life, as people act very differently online than they may in real life. This goes for myself and my friends. Online talking with others isn’t to big of a deal, but in real life I lean towards being more anti-social. This year I’ve definitely become more social than the past few years.

This project was most definitely my least favorite of the 4 we have done this year. I thought we were going to show our online digital footprint but instead we sort of just made an online awareness project. But almost everyone uses the internet nowadays so a lot of youth know what to avoid on the internet, especially teens. I also found this ADL project very uninteresting. This was just some feedback on this project.

What’s The World Around Town? By Zeaus

https://maphub.net/ZeausC/steinbach-geography-project

(I had trouble embedding, if you’re seeing this after 2021-03-19 and it’s for marks, I emailed Mr. Purdy at 4:00 but he has yet to respond. I apologize for this inconvenience.)

Reflection

“Was I able to identify how the geography impacts the town/city with ease? How was I able to find how the physical geography in these areas?

Identifying the geographical impact on Steinbach was pretty easy as the notes given to us in class helped solve a lot of what we’d need to do as research. Finding the geographical impact was also made easier through the notes given in class. Basically Mr. Wilkinson did the hard parts for us.

“How did technology personally affect my learning? What were the pros and cons of using Map.hub?”

Map hub was very easy to use, at first when we were doing this project I thought we’d have to make maps of the city or town that we did but draw them digitally, which I am terrible at doing fine lines with a mouse or even a mouse pad on a laptop. Map.hub is simple because it takes layouts similar to google maps and allows you to add points of interests. I guess the only con that I really had was that when it asks you if you want to delete something you can delete a whole marker. This definitely didn’t happen when I was trying to get rid of a sentence.

“How would you refine your assignments in the future?”

Definitely picking a more interesting city. When you pick a town that’s just surrounded by dry fields and flatlands, it gets pretty uninteresting. Luckily though Steinbach wasn’t too boring and I was able to make a decent map. Another way I could refine something similar to this would probably be adding more information on certain markers, maybe even add more markers.

“Were you satisfied with the result of you design and solutions?”

I’m definitely proud of my map. I learned about a city that I will probably never visit in my life, but it’s cool to see how different land can be when we’re only 2,000 KM away from each other. I believe my marker on Steinbach in 25 years will either be close or completely off target.

My Podcast

W

What were the books you read? Did you enjoy them?

As mentioned in the podcast I read The Five People you meet in heaven by Mitch Albom while Chase read Little Brother by Cory Doctorow. I definitely liked my book because of how realistic it was, the lessons it teaches and the short but rewarding story that really makes you feel for each character it introduces. I didn’t mention this in the podcast but in one part of the story it makes you feel anger or disgust towards a character but then you feel pity for the exact same character, And that’s why I believe this book is so good. No matter who they are, it evokes some sort of emotion out of you, even at the end it talks about someone from the bank, a very minor character but you can just get this sort of “pathetic ” feeling from him because he’s treating this person who we’ve learned about and seen their life treated like nothing but an ordinary case. But that’s how life is and Eddie’s life was just an ordinary case.

How did you feel about working with a partner? Did you make the work equal? Was it more trouble than a benefit?

Working with Chase was a fun experience because I could tell he sort of wasn’t enthusiastic that we had to do this but he still gave it his all and afterwards we both seemed to enjoy recording the podcast. Also on one side he thought of his book as being decent but not the best, even boring at times. But I loved my book and I was able to go into depth with a few of my questions. One question though I did forget what Chase had asked so I may have started talking about something else. But overall working with a partner was definitely a benefit and better than writing a boring essay about our books.

What was your takeaway from the project?

The takeaway I got from this project was that just because a novel is short doesn’t mean the story won’t be interesting. With most of the books I’ve read the shorter books lean on more of a kids story, but this book may only be around 200 pages long but it leans into some very realistic topics like I do believe it’s called Combat Stress Reaction or CSR where a soldier basically gives up fighting or like what happens to Eddie they want to do something good in their time of war so they become delusional and start imagining things that aren’t there. But Eddie wasn’t entirely delusional.

My Storyboard

Quickly just want to apologize for the quality, also for shot #2 Talking about the Music/Sound it’s a hard to see so I’ll repeat it here. Music/sound: When Edward slices the leg off of the topiary the brass and percussion instruments crash to give more of an effect.

Tim Burton, in Edward Scissorhands, uses a really interesting type of lighting in this scene, where the sky may be black but the lighting around Edward is still bright as day. And from what I took from that was that even though it’s night Edward is surrounded by a lot of light, it shows he’s not a villain, he’s just conflicted and he’s been holding in so much anger because the people around him even though he’s been kind to them they’ve been treating him like a tool with no emotions. In my storyboard I mentioned how I made the sky black but kept the lighting to day, in shot #4 I turned the lamppost on but it didn’t do very much because you could still see everything as clear as day hehe. The only shot where it was night was shot #3 where I had to make the outside dark because that’s how Helen was in the movie but I made the walls on the inside white to make her house a little brighter looking on the inside. I feel as if this makes Edwards rampage a little more justifiable as the townsfolk take what Edward gave them for granted.

My graphic novel adaptation really taught me how much symbolism can be put into a movie, and I never watched Edward Scissorhands before this and I thought it was a simple kids movie (Which it’s not) but it’s crazy how much planning was put into this movie. Never did I think while watching Edward Scissorhands I’d take the lighting as a form of symbolism, at least that’s how I felt on my first viewing of the movie.

Quick Paragraph About Me

Hi, my name is Zeaus.( Zay-us ) I’m in grade 9 this year and my favorite subject is either social studies or science. I guess some words to describe me would be anti-social, shy, and I think realistically. (The middle ground for pessimism and optimism.) I learn best in a quiet environment without social interaction. I don’t really have any ideas on ways to express myself since I’m not very artistic, but I do play a lot of video games in my spare time. My musical taste ranges from music from early 2000’s to 2015/18. I don’t really listen to many songs that have been recently released.

My Most Used Website

https://www.youtube.com/ I mean it’s sort of obvious in the world we live in. YouTube is the website I’m on every week. My YouTube recommendation’s do vary, but one YouTube channel that I enjoy since they’re educational is “Overly Sarcastic Productions” because they talk about history, movie/video game tropes, myths and many other topics.

My Favorite Video

Since we’re already on the topic of “Overly Sarcastic Productions” one of my favorite videos is also there most popular. It’s about H.P. Lovecraft. https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=PmdzptbykzI

My Favorite Image

I didn’t really know what to put for this spot so I decided to put a picture of my favorite animal.

My Favorite Quote

I don’t have a favorite quote. There’s not very many quote’s that I think about regularly, and I’d rather just explain my reasoning instead of inserting a famous quote and lying about how I resonate with said quote.
