Spanish 10 Core Competency Reflection

Creative Thinking

My Artifact: My Spanish Family Tree

I can develop a body of creative work overtime. I have demonstrated this through my Spanish family project by producing creativity through this project. This project allowed for a lot of creativity through choices that were up to me. I chose to do a PowerPoint showcasing all of my family members and speaking about them. I chose to do a PowerPoint because I thought that would be the best way to show my creative ideas. My artifact is my family tree with Spanish translations for all of my family members. I showed creative thinking through this project by using my own creative ideas to produce a project that well presents my family in the Spanish language. Creative thinking is shown quite often throughout Spanish 10 through means such as projects, conversations, and much more.

Vertical and Horizontal Lines

Slopes

The slope of any given horizontal line will always be 0. This is because if you were to write the slope of a horizontal line it would be 0/x no matter what x is, the slope will always be 0. The slope of any given vertical line is undefined. This is because the actual slope of the line would be x/0 and because you can’t divide a number by 0 in math, the slope is now undefined.

Slope: undefined
Slope: m=0

Equations

The basic equation is y = (slope) x + b. To write the equation for a vertical line you need to write x = whatever the x-intercept is (meaning the point on the x-axis goes though). For example, the equation for the vertical line previous is x = 6.

Functions and Non-Functions

The easy way to tell if any given line is a function or not is by doing the vertical line test. If the line intersects the graph more than once, then the line is not a function. This means that any given vertical line will not be a function and any horizontal line will be a function.

This line is a function
This line is not a function

Domain & Range

The domain of a vertical line will always be x=__ and the range of a vertical line will be y=all real #’s. The domain will just be where the line hits the x-intercept and the range will be all real #’s because it is continuously going up and down.

Example Above. Domain: x=4 Range: All Real #’s

The domain and range of a horizontal line will be the opposite of vertical. The domain of a horizontal line will be x=all real #’s and the range will be y=__. Once again the range will be where the line hits the y-intercept and the domain will be all real #’s because it is continuously going side to side.

Example Above. Domain: x= All Real #’s Range: y=4

How to Use Parenthesis

Self Evaluation

In my opinion, I think this project worked well in most aspects. Our design had no real common purpose other then to answer the question on how to use parenthesis. We decided to use Power Point because it seemed that we (as a group) knew how to use Power Point the best out all the sites and applications we knew. So with us using Power Point then we thought that we could get the best results using it. We would usually start by finding a problem then getting an idea from everyone on how to solve it. A simple example being, what program we should use? I said I was fine with anything as long as we all agreed, then Aiden and Ferando thought it would be good to use Power Point. When coming up with the design and finding who did what it was a process of figuring out what we need done, who is willing to do it, and how its going to get done. So after finding all the different topics we need, we split up the work evenly and decided who did what. Working as a group worked quite well in my opinion simply because there was not a lot of talking and conversing but there was no real need. I say this because after everyone had gotten there topics and information then that’s when we put it on the Power Point and constructed it how we liked. In the group we had we made decisions collectively and decided what we thought was best as a group. In terms of problems that we faced, there was only one big problem is that we planned on recording the Power Point and post it as a video. This didn’t work (I think) because I didn’t have the latest version of Power Point. We got through this simply by making it a pdf and posting it that way. With how well the project turned out, I think it turned out pretty well. Some changes for next time would probably be some simple things like more talking, better communication outside of class, and a few more small things. These are a few of the comments and notes I have on my “How To Use Parenthesis” project. Thank you for reading.

My Most Successful Foods Lab

For the choice of my most successful foods lab I would probably say it was my pizza lab. For this lab I made homemade pizza in a cast iron with peppers and more. I liked this recipe because of many different reasons such as flavor, texture, consistency, and more. The thickness of the crust mixed with a good amount of cheese and the few topping that were added just made a great pizza for me. I chose this as my most successful foods lab mainly because of the turnout but also from the collaboration from me and my partner. While the turnout was good the process went well because it was no real challenge for us. The teamwork was somewhat simple for this lab so making ours excellent was quite easy. We followed the inductions almost to a T and helped the turnout quite a bit. The product standards were met quite well by a nice crisp crust, a good amount of cheese, and a few others. I would say the final products was probably the best success because the taste was really close to what I was hoping for with a thick crust that really put the dish over the top. The taste was fairly close to a normal pizza from whatever pizza restaurant you would get it from. If we had a few more personalized toppings the pizza would taste almost exactly the same. I’m most proud of the dough when it comes to this dish because for it being my first time making it I think it turned out pretty well. In this dish like I said I’m probably most proud of to dough or the cooperation between my and my partner. Because this was my first time ever making dough I was quite proud of it and how it turned out with the pizza. And this was my most successful foods lab (in my opinion).

My Most Challenging Foods Lab

Out of the many foods labs I have done there have been a few challenging ones. All of them not horribly bad but, some had a few hiccups along the way. In my opinion the vanilla cupcakes were the most challenging for me. Not necessarily because the process was hard but just because the outcome was not as I was hoping and it did not taste how I imagined. The making of the cupcakes didn’t go easy but it definitely wasn’t hard. The cake part of the cupcake turned out OK but the icing definitely wasn’t as I was hoping. The icing was not as sweet as I intended it to be and I think I had added too much vanilla. My group had to same consensus about this as I did, we all had a fair about to not waste that much but we were still left with quite a bit because the taste was just not up to what we were hoping. I also say that this was one of my most challenging labs because that day (I’m pretty sure) I had just switched partners again and the teamwork wasn’t amazing. As I said this lab wasn’t very difficult but the turnout just was not as I hoped and that was why I said it was my most challenging lab.

My Favorite Foods Lab: Mac & Cheese Tacos

Many recipes have been made in the past few weeks but if I had choose a favorite out of the many we have made, the recipe I would choose is not even a specific recipe that was given to me but one that was made in a way. This would be my Mac & Cheese Tacos that I made for the create your own Mac & Cheese lab. To describe this dish simply its just your plain old mac & cheese dish with a little spin. This spin would be that its was put in a taco shell and was made to be more of a taco then mac & cheese. The soft cheesy chewiness of the mac and cheese and the crunch from the taco with the heat of the siracha combined to make a great flavorful dish. I was also fond of this dish because of the creativeness from putting mac & cheese in a taco with other ingredients and having it turn out quite well. I like how our group came together on one idea and executing it so it turned out well and how we wanted. Some challenges we faced were that our group was very uncreative at the start and it took us a while to come up with an idea for our mac and cheese. We eventually started working together a bit more and came up with the idea of mac & cheese tacos. Then after we had this idea it didn’t take very long for us to think of the rest. My greatest success for this dish is probably that our group worked together well and had a great outcome towards the end that was most definitely delicious and looked great. These were successes to me because with this idea I honestly didn’t think it would work out that well buy my group worked together and pulled through to make an amazing dish. I was proud that my group finished well and it was paid off by winning the mac & cheese contest (sadly only based on looks).

My Breakfast Home Lab

For my Breakfast Home Lab, I made bacon pancakes with a side of peaches and a fruity mango, raspberry, and peach smoothie. This delicious breakfast dish I called Pancakes With a Twist. I chose to make pancakes over the other four because there such a simple breakfast but they can changed very easily and edited to make them how you want them. I saw this opportunity and I chose to make pancakes and find a way to make them my own. I added bacon to these pancakes because I usually have it on the side but I thought the idea was interesting to put it inside. I had also thought that with a pancake like this I decided a boring cup of orange juice just wasn’t going to work. So I decided to make a fruit smoothie for a change of taste and to get the fruit and vegetable side on the dish. A good way to describe this dish is flavorful. I say this because with the many flavors of the bacon, pancakes, syrup, smoothie, and peaches, you get many different tastes and flavors. You get the smooth sweetness for the smoothie and syrup, furthermore you get a savory taste for the bacon when it’s in the pancakes and on the side. A challenge I faced and overcame was that I didn’t have the strawberries and blueberries I originally planning on using. So I overcame that by instead editing the recipe by using what I had which was peaches, mangos, and raspberries. I’m proud of the creativeness of thinking outside the box to put bacon in the pancakes and to improvise by using different fruits with the absents of the ones I was hoping for. My parent wasn’t very fond of the amount of char on the pancakes but did like the taste of the smoothie and the syrup and with the peaches.

Kitchen Tools/Appliances

The lab of oatmeal chocolate chip cookies went quite well. A success was that we made cookies that tasted delicious, we worked well as a group and a team, and the dishwashing was easy. The cookies tasted delicious because we followed the recipe almost the the T. When it came to planning not much was needed but what was needed was planned. As we started we talked about what was going to happen who was going to do what and who was doing the dishes. A challenge was that we didn’t know where where the kitchen equipment was and if one person took something out the other might not where it goes. Other then that there was not that many challenges that we came across while cooking.

In the kitchen I think that the electric mixer or a bowl was the most useful. If a cookie sheet would count as a tool then I would say that but I don’t think it does. I say the electric mixer or a bowl was our most useful tool because the bowl was obviously for holding and mixing our ingredients. The electric mixer was useful for mixing the ingredients and it could be done by hand but it made it so much quicker and easier so I think it helped a lot. I could use the bowl for many different things like something to eat out or use them at a tracer for something like cookies and much more. The mixer could also be used for something like whipping egg whites, mixing ingredients, and a few other things. A fun fact about the electric hand mixer is that it was made on June 10th of 1922 by Kitchen-Aid. Unfortunately I do not have any photos of the cookies because we ate them so fast.

Safety and Sanitation

The lab went well because the outcome looked and tasted pretty good. We worked well as a group/team, we finished fast, and the dishwashing was very easy when we were working together cooperatively. The only challenge or place needed for improvent is maybe finding a way to make the scones less dry because me and my partner didnt like that.

There was not that many safety and/or sanitation concerns in this lab specifically. We made sure that everything was safe and clean. We did that by using oven mits when taking the scones of the oven. We also made that the dishes were clean for the next people that used them. Last (but most definitely not least) we washed our hands quite often so no germs contaminate our food. This is especially important because with COVID-19 going around and all other germs that can be harmful, we need to keep them away from our mouths’ and face to keep us for getting sick or disease.

About Me

My Bio

My name is Devonte and I’m a grade nine at Centennial. Some of my favorite things to do are exercise, play basketball, and play video games. My favorite subject is P.E and I dislike science quite a bit. Another favorite subject I have is math just because its something that is easy for me. There is not much else about me because I’m pretty boring. My main and only sport at the moment is basketball, but I do quite a bit of extra physical activity for fun and to keep myself active and in shape. I like listening to music most times such as, working out, walking from place to place, playing video games and more. I also like skiing a lot because its fun, I’m good at it, and it is something fun to do in the winter. I also like spending time with friends just because they make life a little less boring.

My Favorite Website

My favorite website is https://www.youtube.com/. I chose this website just because YouTube there is so many videos to explore. If I need help with almost anything YouTube will can help me. Even my basketball coach gave me some YouTube videos of drills to practice over the quarantine. Whether I need help with homework or am just bored I can use YouTube (usually).

My Favorite Video

This is my favorite video at the current moment

I chose this video (out of many) because one of my goals is to learn how to invest in the stock market in later years. This is one of my goals because if I learn how to invest in the stock market early on, I will be able to invest later and make money.

My Favorite Photo

NBA's Kawhi Leonard drove 20-year-old car despite $94 million contract
A photo of Kawhi Leonard

I chose this photo because Kawhi Leonard is one of my favorite basketball player and he inspires me and I love his play style. I found this photo on google after searching his name.

My Favorite Quote

“You have brains in your head. You have feet in her shoes. You can steer yourself any direction you choose.” This is my favorite quote by Dr.Seuss. I like this quote because of how simple it is and how meaningful it is.

My Favorite Food Memory

One of my most memorable food experience was my grandfathers birthday a year ago. It happened in a restaurant where you have to cook the food yourself. We ordered a lot of raw meat and cooked it our self. It was most memorable because of how good the food was, how much food we got and my grandfathers reaction to the cake afterward. We ended up ordering way too much food and couldn’t finish it all but there was not a huge fee for not eating all the food that was ordered. After the restaurant we went to his condo for desert. My grandfather is a geologist and for his birthday we got him a geology cake made of fondant, sugar crystals and more. (This is an image of the cake below)
