Physical and Health Education 9

The aim of Physical Health Education 9 is to enable all students to develop knowledge, movement skills, and positive attitudes and behaviors that contribute to a healthy, active lifestyle. The students will have the opportunity to:
• Participate in, and experience, a variety of performance and leisure-oriented activities.
• Develop positive attitudes towards physical activities.
• Be able to develop positive personal and social health-related behaviors, and work cooperatively in group activities.
• Acquire skills and knowledge necessary to develop an active and healthy lifestyle.
• Activities will include a selection of team games, individual and dual activities, dance, and minor games

Physical and Health Education 10

Fitness and Conditioning 10

Fitness and Conditioning 10 is an introductory athletic training class. Students will focus on learning functional movement sequences and proper training techniques. Emphasis is placed on safety and progressively increasing strength safely through a variety of training methods. Plyometrics, interval training, running, and weight training will all be utilized. All students welcome!

Active Living 11 & 12 (Regular)

In this course, students will be participating in a variety of sports and physical activities. In addition, there will be some health-related content that may be delivered in a classroom setting. This class will include the use of regular PHE facilities on a regular basis.

Students will be working towards being able to do the following:

• Demonstrate appropriate movement skills for a variety of physical activities and environments

• Develop and demonstrate strategies to effectively participate in a variety of physical activities

• Apply methods of monitoring and adjusting exertion levels in physical activity

• Describe the impact of various types of physical activities on health and mental well-being

• Plan ways to overcome potential barriers to participation in physical activities

• Explain how developing competencies in physical activities can increase confidence and encourage lifelong participation in physical activities

• Explain the importance of resilience in maintaining personal health

** This course offers three field trips, therefore, there will be a minimal course fee attached to this class.

Foundation: PHED 10

Active Living (Enhanced) 11 & 12

In this course, students will be participating in a variety of sports and physical activities. In addition, there will be some health-related content that may be delivered in a classroom setting. This class will include the use of regular PHE and community facilities on a regular basis.

Students will be working towards being able to do the following:

• Demonstrate appropriate movement skills for a variety of physical activities and environments

• Develop and demonstrate strategies to effectively participate in a variety of physical activities

• Apply methods of monitoring and adjusting exertion levels in physical activity

• Describe the impact of various types of physical activities on health and mental well-being

• Plan ways to overcome potential barriers to participation in physical activities

• Explain how developing competencies in physical activities can increase confidence and encourage lifelong participation in physical activities

• Explain the importance of resilience in maintaining personal health

There is a course fee associate with this class. This will pay for the enriched experienced (field trips) that are listed below. Field Trips are an important part of the course; a course enrichment fee will be charged for these trips which typically include a selection of Rock Climbing, Trampoline Park, Bowling, Skating, Lazer Tag, Billiards, among others.

Fitness and Conditioning 11/12

Fit your weight training routine into your daily schedule and get credit for it. This course is for beginners and experienced weight-trainers and is a great opportunity to improve your overall fitness level through weight training. You will learn about muscle physiology and anatomy, as well as do a broad range of programs working on muscular endurance and strength. This is a good opportunity to use class time to improve your body for the activities in your life.  The Fitness 12 is for those who have successfully completed the Fitness 11 course and emphasizes developing a personal fitness program while focusing on safety, warm-ups, basic procedures, nutrition, and advanced training programs and principles.

Fitness and Conditioning 11/12: Basketball

This class is designed for dedicated student-athletes who want to participate in 90+ hours of intense on-court basketball instruction to augment their training and help participants achieve their individual goals. A majority of class time is spent focused on individual skill development and offensive/defensive concepts as well as sport-specific fitness and theory.  The AM class runs on a linear schedule starting at 7:00 AM four days a week from September to November and April to June.

Fitness and Conditioning 11/12: Football

This course is designed for athletes who wish to develop sport-specific fitness and skills. Students will focus on a wide variety of advanced conditioning programs such as plyometrics, interval training, running, and weight training as they relate to football. Specific physical components of the course will include speed, agility, weight training, and quickness. Special emphasis will be placed on developing individual skill development programs that best meet the student’s needs. This course is open to grade 10, 11, and 12 students. This course will run in the AM block.

Fitness and Conditioning 11/12: Soccer

To become an elite soccer player, athletes need to not only be technically gifted but also need to have a certain amount of sport-specific knowledge and education that doesn’t always develop strictly on the field. This course combines the technical and tactical development of on-the-field soccer with fitness/strength conditioning, game principles/philosophies, film analysis, nutrition, leadership enhancement, as well as coaching philosophies. Classroom instruction and functional strength training will accompany the on-field player development in this course.

Fitness and Conditioning 11/12: Women’s Fitness

Often the personal fitness goals, nutrition interests, body image questions, and activity choices for females are best met in a comfortable, fun, and non-judgmental environment of an all-female class.  This course will appeal to all females, whether you bring a highly competitive team sports background or a limited sports activity history. This course will provide a supportive and informative platform for improving one’s overall physical, mental, and emotional health.  A variety of fitness concepts and pursuits will be offered.  Some of which may include aerobics, step aerobics, running, walking, boot camps, and yoga as well as less traditional activities like Aquafit and Zumba may be explored.  There will also be a focus on nutrition, leadership, motivational coaching, and fitness theory.  Students will also learn the fundamentals of muscular conditioning in activities like weight training and yoga, as well as circuit training using a variety of contemporary fitness equipment.  They will use this knowledge to create and participate in an independent fitness program geared to their personal fitness goals.

Course Fee: This course is subject to an optional $50 course fee to provide for off-campus activities and guest instructors.
