Transforming Parabolas

Paragraph

A,H, and K all uniquely affect the parabola. The A value effects which way the parabola opens along with how wide the parabola is. For my green parabola the A value is negative which means it opens downward. In my blue parabola the A value is a fraction which makes it open up a lot wider than the parent function (red parabola). The H value determines the horizontal displacement of the vertex. That means that it dictates where the parabola is placed from side to side. The H value is always negative so when building a quadratic equation using the vertex… EX (9,2) You must flip the X value when you plug it into the equation as H. So (9,2) becomes y=a(x-9)*+2. The H value also determines the axis of symmetry. My purple parabola has an H value of -2 which is why it is 2 to the right of the parent function. The K value is by far the simplest, it is the Y value of the vertex. This means the K value (and the A value) determine whether or not the parabola has x intercepts. For instance if you have a vertex of (9,2) your K value would be +2. So when putting it into an equation it will look like this y=a(x-9)*+2. For example my black parabola has a K value of -2 so it is placed 2 down from the parent function.

Core competencies

1. How did you represent the same mathematical idea in multiple ways in this assignment?

During this assignment I found ways to talk about the equation by referring to the parabola, writing the equation and describing how it would effect the outcome. I also referenced many different parabolas with different values and characteristics.

2. State some of the relevant mathematical vocabulary words you used to demonstrate your understanding.

Parent function, Vertex, quadratic equation, displacement, axis of symmetry, x intercepts.

3. How did you use formatting to share your information in a clear and organized way?

I have one photo for my graph and one photo for my equations. One paragraph for my information and then my reflection. I clearly ran through all of my information and displayed my knowledge and moved onto the next topic.
