The core competencies-

The core competencies that are represented in this assignment were that of collaboration. I demonstrated this when I worked with a fellow student to create both the poster and the presentation afterwards. we had to decide who did what parts of the poster and how we wanted it to look.

Pre-Calculas 12: Daniel’s Conics Project

For the different feature of my face I used many different graphs but mainly used different ellipses in combination with restrictions to make a majority of the shapes. I first started by creating a point and sliders in combination with template graphs to make the process of creating more detail later in the project easier. I then made the general shape of my head as it would give me a sense of scale and how things would look in the end, to make the shape of my face I use a large eclipse as it generally matched the shape of my head pretty well, I originally attempted using a bi-quadratic polynomial to match the chin better but I couldn’t get it to work quite right so I ended up using an ellipse which matched quite closely. once I had the head I followed the same process for the ears and made use of multiple restricted ellipses to create a more accurate shape, the point and sliders I made earlier made this process a lot easier as I just had to line things up and then put the numbers I had from the labeled point and sliders into an equation. It was at around this time where I made two equations which were just very steep and flat slopes which I used to eye ball restriction so that when I wasn’t sure of the decimals needed to get it quite right I could use the lines in combination with the labeled point to restrict the graphs. Once I finished the head I moved onto the eyes. For the eyes I used circles for the eyes because well pupils and iris’ are round, and for the rest of the eye I again used a combination of restricted ellipses to create and accurate shape, this is where I used some creative restrictions to make the eyes more accurate. I used the equations I made for the top and bottom parts of the eyes as restrictions on the pupil and iris to make it appear as though they were behind/inside the eye. I then added a custom colour to the iris and shaded the iris and pupil in by making the graphs into inequalities rather than an equation. Once I finished with the eyes I moved on to the mouth. Originally when I began making the mouth I tried to use a sin graph for the top lips but I couldn’t get it to fir quite right so I ended up using a combination of a few quadratic graphs and did my best to match the curves. Once the mouth was dong I moved on to the nose. For the nose I used a combination of three types of restricted graphs, the main one being a hyperbola with an ellipse to create the main shape with some quadratics to make the rest of the shape. Next I moved on to the hair. The hair was again mostly restricted ellipses, I tried using a sin graph but my hair wasn’t consistent enough for it to match in enough places. Lastly, I made the eye browns. The eye brows were the simplest to make and were a combination of restricted ellipses and slope graphs. So in conclusion, if you try anything other than an ellipse, somehow the ellipse is still the better option.

Pre-Calculus 12 Self-Reflections

Critical Thinking

a problem from the trig identities formative

I can use evidence to make simple judgments. when going through the process of this question I was keeping in mind the formula we had on our sheet and how it seemed similar to the numbers and functions in the question, this led to a further understanding of how the formula works and how the formula can be adjusted to fit more scenarios. This understanding led to looking at how the other formulas can be adjusted or manipulated in different scenarios to better fit a wider range of question. As a critical thinker in math I believe I would like to improve how I look at questions in the sense of how I analyze the strategies involved in the question and how these strategies can be applied to other kinds of questions, as well as access my own efforts and experiences to identify new goals and areas in which I can improve mathematically.

Physics Core Competency Reflection

I believe I am more exteroceptive under most conditions unless nothing else of note is going on in which case I am much more Interoceptive. I believe this most likely stems from how I almost always pretty aware of my surroundings and as such ill notice more about it but in the case where my surrounding are “calm” or non-noticeable, then I begin to notice more about myself, or if something happens that bring my attention to myself.

I believe a form of mediation in which I am more interoceptive might be more helpful to personal growth

I believe a slow cyclic breathing technique would be best for meditation or a box breathing method.

I believe a regular focused cyclic breathing would be adequate in calming me for a test, or a breathing technique I was taught at martial arts in which you breathing in for a period of time and then exhale in short breaths would also likely work.

Core Competency Self-Assessment

Critical and Reflective thinking

Should our criminal justice system be more punitive or rehabilitative? Why? To answer this question we must ask ourselves what the results of each would be in a country like Canada. It is my belief the for the size of country and kind of country that Canada is it is better to be rehabilitative as if you try to punish all criminals, they are not always actually responsible and would likely take a long time based on the population size of Canada compared to amount of crimes being committed that each require individual court hearings. It is also sometimes the case that punishments ruled are not matching or fair compared to the crime or the circumstances behind the crime.

I can analyze evidence to make judgements. I had to do this during the Ganja queen assignment when I was asked whether I believed Ms. Corby to be innocent or guilty. I had to make use of the facts of the case we were made aware of as well as my understanding of the legal working of the Indonesians legal system.

Woodworking 11/12 Competency Reflection

In class Mr. Huber explained to the guitar builders how we would go about mounting the tuners on our guitars, however my tuners were not a match for the one he described on how to install as they had special holes that needed to be drilled, and although I had some help from a fellow student who had done this before, I had to come up with an accurate method in which to drill the holes to properly line them up. I put the tuners in and then used squares to properly mark out the spot to drill. Once I drilled the holes however, some of them had likely shifted a small amount as the tuners were not perfectly in line to solve this issue I used a different sixed drill bit that would give me some more wiggle room to move the tuners to appear more inline without showing that a larger hole had to be drilled.

Core Competency Goals

If the group is not productive, we can discuss whatever it is keeping us off topic and see if it can be resolved in order to get things moving in the right direction. I need to get better about keeping groups I work in on topic and paying attention. I will attempt to do this by keeping aware of what my group members are up to and making sure that the work we are doing is of interest to them so they feel more motivated to work and not be distracted.

I show that I value feedback from others in my group by talking to them about their ideas. My goal is to improve communications with others in regard to the feedback they provide on my suggestions. I will attempt to do this by taking more time and effort to discuss why I may disagree or agree with others and make sure I take the time to understand the other’s point of view.

In discussions and conversations, I help to build and extend understanding by asking lots of questions about anything that confuses or interests me. My goal is to be better about interrupting people with questions and to let them finish their thought so as to not forget what they were saying. I will try to fix this by being more patient when someone is talking and will try to remember my questions for the end in case they don’t answer one.

Group Work in Math

Pros/Cons of group work

I consider the major pro of group work is that everyone brings something to the table in terms of skill and ideas. it also often will provide motivations to get tasks done on time as you know others are relying on you to get it done as well. A con that may arise is that that work can end up being split unevenly and can result in some members “piggybacking” off of their group members (luckily, we did not have this issue during our project).

Core competencies

One of the ways I ensure my group is clear on the common purpose is to have periodic check-ins with my group members to make sure they are on track and things are running smoothly and everyone knows their roles.

If there is disagreement within the group, I find it helpful to look at things from their perspective to see if there are alterations that need to be made to how we’re running things or if it is a disagreement brought upon by something small that is easily resolved.

I know the group is working well together when I hear/ see, tasks getting done, members asking other members about progress or other question they may have about their own or the other’s tasks. I also know things are getting done as I check how the projects looks before I go t sleep and ask to see how peoples progress is.

If the group is not productive, we can discuss what may be interfering with their ability to complete their tasks, such as other schoolwork, to get things moving in the right direction. I also offer to provide assistance if there are other issues such as a lack of understanding of the subject matter.

Learnings in Group Work

In this semester I learned that preplanning and making sure everyone knows their roles and deadlines provides very good results. I also learned that its often better for me personally to ask everyone to provide their ideas on how they would like things to look and then compile them in such a way that works with everyone in the group.

How effectively did your work (in terms of communication and interactions)?

During the project I worked with Jihoon and we were able to cleanly and concisely using discord as a form of communication to discuss issues or successes in the project. From what I remember, there was not a moment in which one of us was not aware what the other knew. We discussed all the changes that needed to be made and who was going to make them.

How were you and any of your team members particularly valuable to the team? Explain.

We tried to balance out the workload as much as we could with me designing and printing the body/wheels, and jihoon making the mousetrap and making and eventually making alterations so that the car works. In the end I believe that without jihoons final alterations we would not have succeeded in our project. I ended up providing more of a supporting role with some alterations made of my own.

What did you learn about working in a group from this project that you will carry into your next group experience?

I learned that the communication levels we employed were very helpful. I also learned that if you preplan what each partner is doing at the beginning then there are less issues down the line. Finally, I learned that when tensions run high you may need to make alterations to how you are working together to make sure the task is completed to the best of your abilities.

PHE 10 AH Reflection

My Feelings

I feel pretty good this morning

Personal Health and Wellness

When I need to boost my mood or refocus, I will often take a short break or think through whatever is distracting me. Often, when I’m working on projects at home, I will take a short break, during which I will either just sit and listen to some music and think or go find my dog. When I feel distracted at school I try to think through whatever is distracting me so that I can get back to focusing on whatever it is that needs focusing on. If my mood is negative at school I take breaks and think of what I think will improve my mood, usually funny things my dog has done.

When I am sad, angry or frustrated, I take a breath and think of something other than the current situation or rationalize the current situation and why I am frustrated. This helps me be more productive and calm.

Core Competency Reflection

I can show a sense of accomplishment and joy. I take pride in my work and myself.  I demonstrated this in class often when accomplishing a skill that I was practicing for a long time, such as a fake smash during our badminton unit.

I find it easy to be part of a group. I feel pretty good working with most anyone in my class. As far as I know have good relations with almost everyone in my class.

I recognize different points of view and can disagree respectfully. I demonstrated this during our football unit when I disagreed with the QB about certain strategic decision.

I demonstrate respectful, inclusive behavior. During our team units I try to make sure to include and allow for every teammate to preform to the best of their abilities.
