Core Competency Self-Assessment

Critical and Reflexive Thinking

Should our criminal justice system be more punitive or rehabilitative? Why?

I think the criminal justice system should be punitive and rehabilitative because different systems are in different orders, in different ways. I think certain prisons should be punitive because it’s for criminals who have done the worst crimes. The juvenile prisons that are for the youth should be rehabilitative, this is so their mindset can improve as well as their actions and behavior. I feel like prisons should be both, strict and open to rehabilitation. This is for those who want to improve and get help, its open to them just as it is for the public.

Skills

I can analyze evidence to make judgements.

I can do this by any time I look at a case study and by asking and answering questions. This skill is also shown by just discussing murderers, crimes and even the victim. I use critical and creative thinking skills when it comes to this. I make judgements by observing the case or whatever it may seem to be and give feedback. This is mostly shown with the assignments we do in class and discussions.

This skill has made me use it in real life, such as paying more attention in class or just by watching a show at home. It has made me more aware of my surroundings and has led me to be more cautious. This is a very helpful skill and I am proud to see my growth in it.

Core Competency Self-Assessment: Communicating and Collaborating

Critical and Reflective Thinking

Collaboration:

I show this quality when I’m within a group discussing future events and planning for further steps for our project or grad committee. This is seen when my project, forgotten orphans came together to talk about what we could do further and in the future due to a step back because of overlapping events that occur. As for the future I’m sure this quality will come in handy to do things for projects or things for the school’s environment.

Communication:

As a leader who is part of leadership, I am able to communicate with peers and my group members on how to learn, grow and plan in our personal connections project, centennial culture and volunteerism. This is shown when I talk within my group to plan for certain things and plan ahead of time of our future steps to achieve the same goal. This can be in anything. For example, in grad committee we were able to set up a meeting at a certain place and time to plan ahead of an event. This is very helpful as we all communicate and share the common skill to discuss.

Organization:

Organization would be a quality I would like to develop in the future and as we do future team discussions. This is because we seem to be a little messy and not completely know how we’re going to do something. We do discuss, we seem to not plan what we should actually do and how we could do it. This is something we as a group and I need to focus on improving on in the long run.

Time Management:

Time management would be something I personally need to focus on. This is due to work, school and extra clubs I’ve joined. I noticed that I need to manage all and create a plan to do all in an efficient way. This would probably by sorting a schedule when to do homework, leadership and work last as it is scheduled. If it doesn’t seem to work, I would most likely change my schedule for work and plan a different routine.

I can work with others to achieve a goal by communicating, collaborating and trying to be on the same page as others to achieve a certain goal. This is shown when certain member and I organized things for grad committee. For example, the senior sunrise was set by students such as me, by planning ahead and communicating by creating a group chat to work through with the plans. Then we later spread it among the grade 12’s. This led senior sunrise to be a great success, which tell us we can do things in this way in the future.

One thing I have learnt for sure while being in leadership is time management, more communication skills and collaborating. Overtime, I have learnt to improve in all fields, I do still need to work on those areas more, but I am proud of how much I have improved. Especially in leadership from last year.

My Debate Reflection

Through the debating unit I realized I learn best by watching other debates and picking up strategies from those to help me improve. By doing this, it helped me learn and gain more strengths. I also tend to work better in a quiet environment and discussing certain debate strategies with my partner. This helped us work through the debate preparation smoothly and led us to win our debate. Although, something that I could have worked on is to speak confidently and could’ve practiced presenting my debate in front of someone to improve in that area. Throughout this debate I learnt that communicating is a big step to success to win a debate. When I was having difficulty with something in the debating unit, I usually asked my parents to debate against me to help me improve and look for possible outcomes that could happen during the actual debate. I also would ask my teacher to review my finalized work the morning of the debate, this helped me make some changes and/or add things to my debate. I also found that asking Chatgbt for counterarguments to help with my rebuttals and the debate itself was very helpful. I’m most proud of accomplishing and winning my debates, I really enjoyed debating and it helped me figure out what I may want to do for post secondary.

The Best Resource I Found

Economics of Legalizing Drugs | Office of Justice Programs (ojp.gov)

I chose this link because it provides a lot of information that helped me throughout the debate. It helped support my arguments, especially during cross questioning. It also helped me learn more about the debate topic itself. I will most definitely be using this resource in the future.

My Favorite Quote

“The purpose of debates is to explore issues, not to end them” – David Gemmell

This is my favorite quote about debating because it’s true. Instead of ending the debate with the last say, we should further explore, learn and perhaps resolve issues. At the end of my debate it really unfolded how it was just done, when I wanted to say more. Which also ties to what I am saying now. I feel like I can say more and actually make a change by speaking up or even better by debating.

Core Competency Reflection

Communication:

My strategies for collecting relevant information when I researched for my debate includes using Chatgbt to help provide me and my partner with counterarguments to rebuttal. We researched under each one of those counterarguments and used it to also help with our speeches. I also asked my parents what I could possibly add and asked them to debate with me to find any counterarguments within the debate between my parent and I.

Collaboration:

One of the ways I ensure my partner and I are clear on the common purpose is to share a document with each other and write up any information, links and our speeches under one. This helped understand which points and arguments each of us would do and to not use the same argument in each of our speeches. By doing this we also helped each other improve on our speeches. We also both worked on debates and discussed which ones we would use during the actual debate.

Critical and Reflective Thinking:

I remain open minded as I explored my topic and how I would develop my argument as evidenced by how much research my speech and my rebuttals had. Researching helped improve my debate a lot, as well as helped me be more clear on what I say during the speech. For example, during cross questioning I was able to back up my question or response with my research and somewhat rebuttal what they had said or questioned me on.

Creative Thinking:

When it seems the good ideas just won’t come to me, I listen to music, take a break or re-read my whole debate to help calm myself or create space in my mind to think about what I can do or add. When I listen to certain music, it helps me stay calm and leads me to have a focused mind when doing work such as my debate. If I take a break I can take a breather, maybe a glass of water just to gather myself up again which then leads me right back on track to getting those good ideas for my debate. If I re-read my debate, I can stay calm and focused. By doing this I can add or change things to my debate.

Curricular Competency Reflection

How did your journals support your preparation for your final assessments?

It helped my organize individual pieces of information. By doing this, I was able to collect that information and idea and use it for my other assignment. It’s an easy access of information that i can understand because I put it together.

b. How did the graphic organizer help you connect your novel(s) with the sub-themes?

I had different ideas and key points that helped me understand what the sub theme may be. For example, at first I thought my novels sub theme was identity but as I wrote down key points and ideas, I could see that the sub theme was actually relationships.

c. How did participating in the circle help you formulate your ideas for the essay write?

I could get an idea of how others may see the book, I could use that on myself and my own book. I noticed how thy might come up with certain ideas or how they may use their critical thinking skills. I gathered these ideas and kept it in mind for when it came to writing the essay.

d. How did you choose what you would do to create the personal connection piece?

I knew that I could use my creative thinking skills and apply that to the personal connection piece. I also knew that I can apply my knowledge of how to write to my piece as well and that exactly what I did.

Core Competency Reflection

When I need to boost my mood or re-focus I listen to music to stay on task or to concentrate. I also try to get things done on time so I can get things done and have nothing left to do. I re-focus when I gather up my idea and thoughts and then get back to working.

I appreciate feedback on assignments, projects etc and prefer it comes in the form of a criteria sheet or from an actual teacher. I always like it when they advise ways to improve so I can improve in my writing or just in general.

Some skills I have developed to make my creative activities better are by improving my work by using the feedback to improve. I have also gained more confidence from developing those skills and applying it to multiple things. These things could be either my school work or at work etc.

Chapter 6 test and/or Chapter dialogue

Core Competency

I feel like I could have done better on the test as I made some mistakes on the first part of the test as I did not study that part as much as I needed to, next time I will make flash cards for the ones I’m not so sure or confident about. On the other test I got better than I expected, I think I did pretty good on the spoken part. The tests itself I think I could’ve studied more and done more to improve.

Core Competency Goals

I tend to this this currently and hopefully in the future.

One strategy or activity that stimulates my imagination is…

One strategy or activity that stimulates my imagination is when I listen to music while I’m doing something. Either when I’m doing homework or, a project. This helps me produce more ideas or strategies while trying working. Music helps me focus and work harder. It gives me a certain energy that makes me work harder and process more ideas. I see myself doing this during the year and I hope helps my learning and understanding.

My strengths as a __________ contribute to my community (classroom, club, city, etc.) through/ because…

My strengths as a student and or a classmate to my community is my listening skills. The way I can project this is by focusing my full attention on the teacher or my work. Not just my listening skills but my communication skills as well. As I contribute my ideas or participate in the class, I’m using both listening and communication skills. Favourite Recipe

Thai Curry

Making and Sharing Reflection

Share and progress while making to gather feedback. Laying out the step for this Thai Curry was planned out successfully by my peers and I. We had discussed what we would each do when making it and had assigned each group member to make and/or help with the dish. By working together or by following a step by step plan we finished our product with a delicious dish. After we had tasted what we made we talked about the flavours, how does it look like and if we liked it or not; what would we change?

Core Competency Reflection

  1. Examples of where I communicate clearly and purposefully can be seen in…

Before we begin to cook or bake, we communicate with each other about the steps and what each partner will do while making this recipe. We also communicate clearly when cleaning up. Each person gets assigned a job such a washing dishes or special duties. If one person has nothing to do, they come in and help another group member out. For example dish drying, one person could be drying dishes while another can help put away the dishes.

2. I know the group is working well together when I hear/ see…

When I hear them working well together by communicating with each other, helping each other out and equally contributing in cooking or baking. Its also when I see everyone helping out either cooking, baking or cleaning. I can also see this when we are filling out our recipes. There is always someone who needs help filling out their sheet.

3. While working in the kitchen, I help to build and extend understanding by…

Planning every step out before beginning to work. We do this before we cook or bake or before we start cleaning. we can also help build and understand by helping each other out as we work. If someone doesn’t understand something while cooking or baking, we can help each other out by helping them with it. Trying to help them understand and learn.

4. My Goal: If there is disagreement within the group, I find it helpful to…

If there is ever a disagreement we get stuck and we can’t find any ideas to help. Maybe asking the teacher if we can change the recipe a bit so we can contribute both ideas is a way we can help the situation. Myself and other in my group do need to find ways to work on this. I will continue to work on this goal for myself and others. I think I can expand my learning if someone doesn’t agree.

Spanish Reflection

El Artefacto

Core Competency Reflection

  1. I can understand that learning is continuous and my identity will continue to evolve.

I am aware that learning a new language such as Spanish will take me some time to learn. As I continue learning in my Spanish class, I hope to see some great improvement with my ability to read and write in Spanish. So far, I can understand the work we are given in class and hope to continue this. For example, we have done a presentation with a conversation in Spanish. We were told to converse with another student. Not only did this help me improve in the language but also help me get to know my peers.

2. I can find it easy to be party of a group.

I can always discuss with the peers around me. We can always help one another with work. This helps me improve my learning and skills for the class. For example, if I am ever stuck on a question and need help understanding, I can always look around for help to the people next to me.

3. I can reflect on my thinking.

I can reflect on my thinking by checking my work twice before submitting any type of work in. I can also do this by asking questions and reflecting on my answers. If I am doing a test, I can always check it over and reflect on my thinking then. I do this with any type of work to help me understand what I am doing.

Eggs Benedict + Scones

Making and Sharing Reflection

My partners and I productively had made this recipe together. We had planned out what we were going to do each step before we started cooking and baking. The process of making the scones were quick and easy considering we had made these once before. We started off discussing our steps and rereading our recipe. When we finally decided what each person will do, we started to gather our materials and began to work. We were great combining the ingredients together and communicating with each other. We had made a mistake in the process, we had forgotten to put the racks in the right place. So, when we had to change the racks, the oven lost some of its heat. In the end, the scones turned out great. Considering we were group of three, we were fast and on time. Two people made the scones, and the other made the hollandaise sauce. In the end we learnt that we could’ve baked the scones longer, it was a bit undercooked but we learnt from our mistakes and now we are aware that we can add more minutes to our baking time. As someone took out the scones from the oven, I set up the tables and got ready to have the scones and egg Benedict with my group member; Zoe. Andrej was part of our group but had to leave half way so instead of six scones we had four. Each person got one egg and two scones. We added the hollandaise sauce on the egg and enjoyed our meal.
