Creating A Model Factory Town

Name of the town: Athegan

Company Name: Cotton Mill Excellence

Resources available: cotton, cotton mill, horse, wood, water, sand, clay, iron

Elements of the town: cotton mill, barn, apprentice housing, brick factory, bakery, butcher, Frank Wales’s fancy house

Population: 148

Explanation / Brief History: The town of Athegan was established in the year of 1847, by a man by the name of ‘Frank Wales’. His family owned a vast amount of slaves (10-15). When his parents died, he sold them all to another man named Charles Moore. Afterwards Wales used the slave money to develop this small town that was not very well known as it locates on the outskirts of Norwich, England. Children and women would work in the cotton mills, whereas the men would work in the brick factory. They would have to take turns cleaning up the barn and taking care of horses. The men and women factory workers were separated and would get severely beat, if to be caught with one another. Workers got payed 5 pence and 3 meals a day with a place to sleep. The baker and butcher get payed 10 pence per day and housing. Individuals were forbidden from leaving the town as Wales demanded that the population increase and command a larger society. The self-absorbed leader’s intentions did work out, as people would come on their horses or by foot thinking Athegan was a place where people could have freedom but on the contrary was really laborious town. They worked for Wales to make and sell bricks

Media Fluency Reflection

The software I used to construct my town is called, “City Creator”. It is an online website that you are able to build cities/towns on. You can choose the background of your choice, decide if building should have roofs or not, and add live objects. Such as horses, people or trees. I did not have a hard time building the town, it was pretty straightforward. The only problem was that I couldn’t turn any of the objects I placed down on the land. That made me only able have the buildings or people facing one direction, but I managed. To plan, I wrote down some of the things I wanted to include in this town, for instance, brick factory, cotton mill and bakery. I then started testing out my towns layout on the website and played with the different settings until I was content with the outcome. The sources I used to create this make believe town were from the book, “Lyddie”.Lyddie was a factory girl and it was clear that life working in the factory was not easy. Another source was from work we had done previously in class and I looked over my notes and got inspired there. ‘City Creator’ is on the older side and maybe out of date, but it works exceptionally well and gets the job done. I like this website, but in the end, I do expect there to be better software to use like SimCity or even Minecraft. You can do so much more on these software and definitely add way more detail.

My bio

My name is Sophia. Some things that you should know about me are that, I love to cook or bake, I enjoy going outdoors by doing biking, camping, or just going on walks. I am a visual learner, so I learn best when I can see what the teacher is talking about. For example, reading or drawings. It is harder for me to listen, because I can get distracted easily. The best ways for me to show you what I know is by writing on paper or on computer, not by speaking because I tend to forget what I’m gonna say next. When I am having difficulty with something, I like to take breaks, and then go back to what I am doing to give my mind a break from work. My strengths are that when I start something, most of the time I’m able to finish it quickly.

My Favorite Website:

I chose this website because I use YouTube often. You can search up anything and you will almost always get what you are looking for. I think it is a reliable source for music, and entertainment.

My Favorite Video:

I chose this video because I joined hip hop dance and I want to become a great hip hop dancer. These dancers are way above my level of dancing but I want to be as good as them soon.

My Favorite Image:

dessert_buffet.jpg (800×348)

I chose this image off of google because the deserts look very good and it inspires me to bake, and be as good of a baker as the person who made these desserts.

My Favorite Quote:

“What comes easy wont last long, and what last long wont come easy.” – Ben Francia

I like this quote because it says that you need to work hard at something for it to stay with you, but if you work at something and it was easy then it wont last very long. So it is better to work hard at something for a longer time and then you will have things that last longer and you can cherish it.
