Linear and Non-linear Equations

Linear Equations

Purple Equation: y=1/3 x-2

Red equation: 2x-3y=12

They are both linear equations. I can tell from the graph because it is a straight line that is a slope (diagonal) and a function. For both, I can tell from the equation because it is in the format y=mx+b .

Non-Linear Equations

Green Equation: y=2^{x}

Orange Equation: x^{2}+y^{2}=16

They are both non-linear equations. I can tell from the graph that it is not linear because it is not a straight line, it is curved. I cant tell from the equation because it is not in the format y=mx+b .

Self-Assesment

I explored mathematical technology when I was graphing to figure out if an equation is linear or non-linear, on the Desmos graphing calculator website. I analyzed data and used criteria to draw conclusions when I was looking at the equations on the online graphing calculator, and was seeing if it was a straight line and a function. If it was, this then determined if it was a linear or non-linear equation. I justified my conclusions with evidence when I compared the equation to the y=mx+b format, and when I tested the equation on the graph with the vertical line test.
